Compliance system overview

Argentina has a mandatory compliance law: Resolution 92/98. It has been in effect since August 1998 and applies to electrical and electronic products marketed in Argentina. The scope of Resolution 92/98 covers electrical and electronic equipment that fall within the electrical rating range of:

Electrical products exempt from Resolution 92/98f

• Medical devices including dental and laboratory equipment and their parts and accessories. These products are regulated by the National Administration of Medicine, Food and Medical Technology. Products such as ambient lighting for clinical use, clinical beds and stretchers, dental furniture, and similar equipment which include electrical devices must comply with resolution 92/98 requirements.
• All electrical material and equipment specifically designed for exclusive use in road vehicles, ships, airships, railroads and other means of transport
• Industrial process equipment that requires trained operators with the exception of portable devices
• Industrial equipment and apparatus for measurement, control and automation of operations and processes
• Data process equipment under Article 7 of Resolution 173 published in March 1999
• Memory units with the exception of those that require an external power supply
• Telecommunication equipment, auxiliary and associated apparatus except for subscriber terminals of any type
• Telecommunication control and adaptation units and signal conversion units
• Telephone and wireless exchange equipment except for private telephone systems with an internal line capacity of equal to or less than 25
• Professional equipment for radio-telephony, wireless or broadcasting
• Internal modems used to transmit data or external types used for public services, television or radio communications.
• All types of lamps greater than 1000W
• Operation, dialog, detection and protection devices used in industrial machines and facilities.
• Equipment used in research, development and quality control laboratories, and parts and components thereof, except when also used for training purposes;
• Low signal electrical cables and conductors, used for audio, video and data transmission applications;

• Any electrical and electronic material and device with a rated current above 63A.

• Products operating at less than 50V with an autonomous power source (battery operated) or an external power supply (including those that may also operate with batteries) except for the following products which are subject to the mandatory certification system:

  • Luminaries and supply systems for luminaries, supplied by power sources directly connected to AC power networks at more than 50VAC.
  • Diachronic lamps and their lamp holders.
  • Hand-held power tools
  • Electric fence energizers
  • Electronic muscle stimulators for fitness activities

UL assistance programme

To assist in complying with Argentinean mandatory requirements, UL de Argentina S.R.L has been accredited by the OAA and recognized by the DNCI as an official certification organization.

UL de Argentina S.R.L. can certify all products under Resolution 92/98, including:

• information technology equipment such as printers, scanners and monitors
• household appliances
• luminaries such as lighting fixtures
• audio and video equipment

 UL authorizes the manufacturers to use the Argentina Safety Mark upon compliance of the essential safety requirements.

Compliance to IEC or IRAM Standards

Resolution 92/98 requires compliance to IEC or IRAM Standards. Existing information and test data used to get the UL certification or an IECEE CB Scheme Report can be used to obtain the Argentine certification.

Evaluations in accordance with UL or IEC Standards must consider the Argentinean deviations such as voltage and plug requirements. Plugs must be certified by an Argentine Certification Body according to IRAM 2063 for Class II products and IRAM 2073 for Class I products.

UL and Argentine Product Certification Mark

As of October 1999, Argentina's Secretary of Industry, Trade and Mining required products that fall under their jurisdiction to bear this mark once they comply with the applicable Argentine requirements.  These products include:

• low voltage electrical equipment
• toys
• cement and steel used in construction
• devices for gas
• Personal protective equipment
• Energy efficiency
