Appliance switches

UL's component certification programs covers a wide range of switches for multiple applications, conditions and markets. In the Appliance and Tool industry, UL currently offers North American certification in accordance with the following standards:

  • UL 1054, The standard for Special Use Switches
  • UL 61058, The standard for Switches for Appliances - Part 1: General Requirements
  • CSA-C22.2 No. 55, The standard for Special Use Switches
  • CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61058-1, The standard for Switches for Appliances - Part 1: General Requirements."

The certification information for all of the switches UL Certified in accordance with the standards noted above can be viewed from UL's Online Certification Directory and UL's iQ Family of databases.

In addition to traditional appliance switches, UL certifies membrane type switches in accordance with UL Subject 2557, the Outline of Investigation for Membrane Switches.

For access beyond the United States and Canada, UL provides customers access to additional marks and schemes to enable switch manufactures to sell their switches worldwide. Learn more.

September 30, 2005 - June 22, 2015Unless requested by the manufacturer in writing to investigate to UL 1054, all new and revised products and constructions will be investigated to UL 61058-1.
August 10, 2009UL 61058-1 (4th edition) was published. This Standard is harmonized to the IEC 61058-1 am 3.2 and contains all of the IEC corrections (corrigendum) material.
September 30, 2010UL 61058-1A will be withdrawn. All UL Recognized Switches for Appliances must comply with either UL 1054 or UL 61058-1.
June 23, 2015All products must comply with UL 61058-1. Products recognized to UL 1054 that do not comply with UL 61058-1 or have not been evaluated for compliance will be withdrawn. The UL 1054 Standard will be withdrawn on June 23, 2015.
